Lee Morse - A Little Kiss each Morning - I Love You, Believe Me, I love You
This is a
pair of Columbia
recordings made by Lee Morse that apeared in Argentina
In The
Columbia A-series:
A Little Kiss each Morning (mx 149684 - 3)
I Love You, Believe Me, I love You (mx 149685 -
2)
Both
recorded December 5, 1929
Coupled
both in Columbia A-8293 (exactly the
same coupling as the U.S.
issue,
Col 2063-D.
Lee Morse
(born Lena Corinna Taylor in 1897) was a singer with an unusual way of singing,
and also an unusual voice, and some of his records are listed in Brian Rust’s “Jazz
Records 1897-1942”.
This item in particular is not listed there but as sometimes
the
inclusion or not on it as a jazz record is a bit personal, I hope many jazz
fans will like this performances, that for many may be new. Enjoy!

Boots And Saddle - I would do anything for You
“Boots And Saddle”:
This
particular tune has appeared in 78 form only in Argentina in Odeon 284465. I think it
has been reissued on Cd somewhere but, of course, the only source for this is the
Argentine Odeon pressing presented here, and, by the way, is not a master
pressing, as it has the small etched matrix Nº 90541-A as opposed to the italic etched
numbers that denote a master pressing. This was recorded on Dec. 21, 1935, and I don’t
know the reason for this being a dub, as other decca Art Tatum records on Odeon are
matrix pressings. Anyway, no matter what it’s a dub, the sound is pretty good even
considering that. It’s a high quality dub, no question about it.
This record
has a peculiarity that I mention in its commentary, so check it also.
“I would do anything for You”:
This tune
is coupled with “Boots and Saddle” that I also comment in its section, but the thing
about it is that this tune also appears on Odeon 286341-B (38388-C), a record
not mentioned in Rust’s discography even in the last (2007) edition of it. Its
coupling is “Indiana” (DLA 2071) recorded July 26, 1940 and for this title in
fact Rust mentions this Odeon release. Well, if he received the data about Odeon 286341 ¿why he didn’t got the
data about the two sides of the record? It’s
kind of a mystery that I will let you people solve if you may.

Los bambucos - You're driving me crazy
The nam
e of this group doesn't suggest anything related to jazz, but , as can be heard, they play quite good jazz of the period. The vocalist is Charlie Robbins and the record was recorded on January 16. 1953 in Buenos Aires and pressed by Pampa, what is believed to be a subsidiary of the local Odeon label at that time.

Té Para Dos - Orquesta Benson
This is an strange coupling of The Benson
Orchestra Of Chicago, labeled "Orquesta Benson" . "TE PARA DOS" is, of course, the very well
known "TEA FOR TWO", and this rare copy of Arg Victor 79574-A couples this Benson item with a
tune by Adolfo Carabelli y su Orquesta, a local band . This acoustic recording was made 28
August 1924 in NYC.

Esparciendo Ritmo en Derredor - Bob Howard
ESPARCIENDO RITMO EN DERREDOR" is the equivalent
of "SPREADIN' RHYTHM AROUND", and we hear this tune played by Bob Howard and his Orchestra, much
in the Waller vocal style by the way, and often surrounded by good jazz musicians of the period.
The sound comes from Odeon 284108 and was recorded in NYC 10 Feb. 1936.

Dulce Lorena - Nat "King" Cole Trío
The famous Nat "King Cole" waxed 6 Feb. 1940 in
Los Angeles with his trio this version of "SWEET LORRAINE", labeled "DULCE LORENA" in this
Argentine Decca 333387 issue. This was when Cole still played jazz and was not devoted to
popular singing.

A Mi Mamacita - Orquesta Ben Bernie
Another curiosity from local issues: This is a
non-vocal version of the standard USA Brunswick version of the same "To My Mammy" recorded about
March 1930. If well not listed in the Jazz Discographies, the inclusion of a hot solo in place of
the vocal adds even a stronger jazz sound, anyway present from the start of the record, a fine
one from the well known Ben Bernie Orchestra.

Cow Cow Blues -Bob Zurke y su Banda de Ritmo Delta
A remarkable recording from Bob Zurke's Delta
Rhythm Band: "COW COW BLUES", labeled in spanish "Bob Zurke y su banda de ritmo delta". His
leader was much praised by Jelly Roll Morton as being a pianist with a superb left hand. The
sound comes from a copy of Arg Victor 26646, waxed May 8, 1940 in NYC.

Cristobal Colón - Bob Crosby y su Orquesta
This recording by Bob Crosby and his orchestra
from a copy of Odeon 286206 titled "CRISTOBAL COLON" is no other than "CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS"
recorded in NYC March 19, 1936, one of the Swing Era classics.

Estoy Loco Por La Bocina Del Automovil - Adolfo Carabelli
This is by one of the best of the local
Jazzbands, and the tune is no other than "I'm Wild about horns on automobiles", in a less
comic vein than other USA bands used to play (Fred Hall, for example), attaining a more
serious approach of a title anyway not well suited to the jazz idiom. Recorded 18 January
1930 in Buenos Aires

El Baile De Los Negritos - Benny Goodman
A big band recording by one of the most famous
orchestra leaders of the time: the "King Of Swing". This "Darktown Strutters' Ball" issued here
sure struts and has also the polished sound of Goodman's Columbia period with all the new sounds
of this later-swing style. Recorded in NYC, 15 Jan. 1942.

Toques Sinfónicos - Carroll Dickerson
This was recorded 5th July 1928 in Chicago
and released only in Argentina, first in the Odeon 193000 series. The record shown is a
somewhat later issue, but being a master pressing its sound is as good as the earlier.
A rare record indeed, with the advantage of being one of Armstrong's finest recordings.

Canción de septiembre - Héctor y su Gran Orquesta de Jazz
"CANCION DE SEPTIEMBRE" played by "Hector y su
gran Orquesta de Jazz" is the spanish translation for "SEPTEMBER SONG", waxed circa Feb. 1952
in Buenos Aires, and comes from a copy of Victor 68-0255. This big band recorded extensively
around this period, so will upload in the future some more with jazz merit.

Indiana - Art Hodes y su Orquesta
This one is a good example of the revival style
that started in the early forties, Art Hodes and his Orchestra, featuring the leader's
barrelhouse piano , and the clarinet of Rod Cless, much in the Teschemacher vein. Recorded in
NYC March 17, 1942. We hear his version of "INDIANA" from a copy of Odeon 286227-B released
in Argentina.

Sensation - Joe Venuti
A fine Jazz classic from the finest violin of
the period and one of the various small groups he assembled along with his friend Eddie Lang
(both of Italian origin). In this issue, the main title is in English and the sub-title in
Spanish, at odds with the previous seen. Recorded 27 Sept. 1928. Collectors will note how the
"Veroton" logo at the left of the label resembles the "Electric" logo of the USA Okehs.
